Elegant businesswoman screaming and holding her headLife is about balance, especially when it comes to your hormones. Every person on the planet can testify to the fact that when your hormones are out of balance, YOU JUST FEEL out of balance. Jokes about PMS (Punish Men Severely) and Menopause (Putting Men on Pause) are abundant, but the sad truth is that so many women are still suffering silently with the effects of hormone imbalance.

The Hormone-Brain Connection

The physical symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats, are well Caution - Menopause Aheadknown. But how do your hormones effect your ability to think?

There is more and more scientific evidence that documents the relationship between your hormones and the cognitive functions of your brain. Here are a few symptoms of hormone imbalance that may sound familiar to you:

  •   Brain fog
  •   Memory problems
  •   Difficulty in retaining new processes
  •   Difficulty in learning a new skill
  •   Feelings of depression
  •   No energy
  •   Disrupted sleep patterns

If you are premenopausal or are going through menopause, recognizing these symptoms can make a huge difference in how you cope with the changes your body may be going through right now.

What Hormones Do

Human NeuronsAccording to the Journal of Applied Physiology, estrogen helps with dozens of actions in the nerve system, including cognitive function, pain mechanisms, fine motor skills, and the regulation of moods. Scientists have discovered estrogen receptors inside nerve cells and have found that the aging brain responds well to the action of estrogens. Estrogen appears to play a part in the prevention of strokes and Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Researchers have also found estrogen and testosterone in parts of the brain that are responsible for emotions, memory and sexuality. Progesterone plays an essential role in the fine balance between hormones and neurotransmitters.

And studies have shown that the influence of estrogen actually causes new nerve and brain cells to form. Research conducted by Dr. Sherwin, a psychoneuroendocrinologist at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, concluded that estrogen has a direct effect on memory functioning, specifically on short-term verbal memory.

According to Dr. Jay Mead, MD, estrogen up-regulates and stimulates serotoninhand with pen drawing the chemical formula of serotonin receptors too. Serotonin is a hormone that is important for restful sleep and feelings of well-being and happiness.

Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer?

I am sure that many women reading this may be fearful of the word estrogen because of the supposed connection of it to Breast Cancer. Let me make one thing very clear: your hormones DO NOT cause cancer. If they did, then every 20 year old on the planet would be ravaged by the dis-ease!

So what is really going on? The problem with estrogen-driven cancers begins when women are exposed to too many Xeno-estrogens, or “false estrogens,” from chemicals in the environment. Antiperspirants, for example, have metals in them that act as “metalloestrogens” and that stimulate estrogen receptor sites in the breast.

Another issue with estrogen is poor metabolism and poor break down of estrogen because of a congested, toxic liver and impaired methylation. If the proper metabolism of food and toxins does not occur, then more aggressive (and less healthy) estrogen will accumulate in the body.

Maintaining Estrogen Balance

Human Brain AnatomySo how do you increase the amount of healthy estrogen in the body in order to maintain a healthy brain?

First you must have an accurate understating of what your hormone levels actually are. This is accomplished with a simple home testing saliva kit. Once you have an accurate understanding of your hormone levels, then you can decide how to bring those levels into balance.

Balancing the hormones can be accomplished naturally in several ways. Plant-based bio-identical topical creams and homeopathic remedies stimulate your body to produce what it needs. Also, a diet that is high in lignans from flax seeds, for example, may also have a protective effect on your hormones.

Finally, be very wary of pharmaceutical, chemically-produced hormone therapies as7 course these have been associated with increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.
